Softball's Rachael Gooch Earns National Recognition After an Incredible Week at the Plate
MARTINSVILLE, VA – Rachael Gooch, a 5'6" sophomore from Virginia Beach, VA, and standout catcher and third baseman for the P&HCC Patriots softball team, has been named the NJCAA DIII Softball Player of the Week for Week 5. The recognition comes after an outstanding week where Gooch displayed exceptional hitting, leading her team to multiple victories.
Gooch posted an impressive .562 batting average over the week, showcasing her offensive prowess. She blasted two doubles, two triples, and three home runs while driving in 15 RBIs. Her offensive efforts were instrumental in the Patriots' success, including a memorable 17-13 victory over CCBC Cardinals, where she contributed six RBIs on five hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
In addition to her recent accomplishments, Gooch was a key contributor to the P&HCC Patriots' 2023-24 season, where the team won the NJCAA DIII National Championship. Her stellar performance that season also earned her NJCAA DIII Second-Team All-American honors.
The sophomore has been a consistent force in the Patriots' lineup this season, and her performance last week highlights her ability to perform under pressure. Her multi-home run game against the College of Southern Maryland, where she drove in nine RBIs and helped her team to a dominant 22-5 win, was a particular highlight of her week.
"I'm extremely proud of Rachael," said P&HCC Patriots head coach. "Her hard work and dedication are paying off. She has been a key player for us all season, and this recognition is well-deserved. We're excited to see her continue to grow and help lead the team as we move into conference play."
Gooch's contributions were not limited to her bat. As both a catcher and third baseman, she has also been a strong defensive presence, providing steady leadership for her team both in the field and at the plate. With her continued performance, Gooch will be an essential player for the Patriots as they enter the upcoming games and start their conference play.
The P&HCC Patriots look to build on this momentum as they prepare for the annual Myrtle Beach Fastpitch Dreams Tournament, where they will face off against top teams throughout the week.
