Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Caldwell Tech, Sets Up Sunday Rematch

MARTINSVILLE, VA – The Patrick & Henry Community College (P&HCC) Patriots split their Saturday doubleheader against Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI), dropping the first game 5-2 before bouncing back with a dominant 6-0 shutout in Game 2.

Game 1: Caldwell Tech 5, P&HCC 2

The Patriots fell behind early as the Caldwell Tech Cobras struck in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on a sacrifice fly from Houston Rector and RBI singles from J.D. James and Tripp Dow to take a 3-0 lead.

P&HCC's offense was stifled by Caldwell Tech starter Hunter Sherrill, who struck out 11 over six innings while allowing just one run on three hits. The Patriots managed to break through in the bottom of the seventh when Tyler White launched a solo home run to right field.

Dylan Grabowski started on the mound for P&HCC, pitching four innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out three. Offensively, Austin MacAnney led the team with two hits, while White and Caden Richter each drove in a run. The Patriots also showcased their speed, swiping five bases, with Grabowski and Richter stealing multiple bags.

Game 2: P&HCC 6, Caldwell Tech 0

The Patriots responded in dominant fashion in the second game, shutting out Caldwell Tech 6-0 behind a stellar pitching performance from Ty Goodson. The right-hander was nearly untouchable, allowing just one hit over six innings while striking out five. Joshua Gunn closed out the game with a scoreless inning of relief.

P&HCC wasted no time getting on the board, as Caden Richter delivered an RBI single in the first inning. The Patriots racked up 11 hits in the game, with Dylan Grabowski leading the charge, going 3-for-4. Richter added two RBIs, while the defense remained flawless, committing zero errors. Ethan Pickering anchored the infield with a game-high six defensive chances.

Caldwell Tech managed just two hits in the game, with Isaiah Mingus and Chase Gribble each collecting one.

Coach Nania's Thoughts on the Doubleheader

Head Coach Brandon Nania praised Caldwell Tech's pitching in Game 1 but was proud of his team's response in Game 2:

"Tough game one, but we have to tip our hat to Caldwell's starter—he had us off-balance and was executing his secondary stuff. They capitalized on our mistakes in that game. In between games, I told our guys that we play the greatest game in the world and that we are lucky to get to do it again in thirty minutes. Ty Goodson had a phenomenal start for us. The offense came to life as we hit their bullpen. Time to finish and hopefully come out with the series tomorrow!"
