P&HCC Softball Climbs to No. 8 in Rankings, Baseball Knocks Off Back-to-Back No. 1 Opponents

SOFTBALL: In the midst of a six-game winning streak, the Patrick and Henry Community College softball squad has risen to No. 8 in the latest NJCAA DIII rankings.

The Lady Pats (17-9, 2-0) swept a doubleheader from No. 2 Spartanburg Methodist at Martin Field on April 4, by scores of 6-5 and 4-1. 

During the week of March 22-28, P&HCC sophomore Danielle King was named NJCAA Division III Softball Player of the Week after hitting .692 with two home runs, three doubles, and eight RBIs.

In 25 games this season, the Lady Pats first baseman is hitting .506 with three home runs, 28 RBIs, and 34 runs scored. King currently ranks second in the nation in runs scored and fifth in the nation in hits (40) and doubles (11).

P&HCC returns to action on the road against another top-10 foe on Saturday, April 15 with a doubleheader at No. 3 Caldwell Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

BASEBALL:  The Patrick and Henry Community College baseball team returned home this week to battle back-to-back No. 1 opponents at Dan Daniel Park in Danville, VA.

On Tuesday, the Pats split a doubleheader with No. 1 (DI) Walters State falling 5-4 in the first contest before bouncing back for a 10-8 victory in the second game. In the first contest, left-handed starter Tony DeLawrence tossed an impressive six scorless frames, allowing only one hit and striking out seven before the Senators stormed back in the seventh. In the second affair, infielder Brendan Burke smashed a grand slam to right-center to propel P&HCC to victory. It was Burke's team-leading fifth home run of the season.

On Wednesday, P&HCC knocked off No. 1 (DIII) Caldwell Tech 7-2, snapping the Cobras 24-game winning streak. In his first start of the year, right-hander Jack McDowell tossed four scoreless innings with six strikeouts, while Johnboy Rittenhouse hit his third homer of the season and shortstop Aidan Cunningham secured two RBI.

The Patriots resume conference play this weekend with a three-game set against Wake Tech in Holly Springs, NC at Ting Park. First pitch in the doubleheader on Saturday, April 15 is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
