Kevin Underwood, a Bassett native and 1994 graduate of Bassett High School, leads Patrick & Henry Community College’s women’s cross country and track programs while serving as assistant coach for the men’s teams. A former multi-sport athlete, Underwood was a four-year letterman in cross country and track before going on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 2001–2005, with deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Northern Watch, and the Global War on Terrorism.
Since 2012, Underwood has coached at Bassett High School, where he has guided boys’ cross country and track teams to multiple Piedmont District championships, including five district titles in cross country and four consecutive district titles in outdoor track. He has coached numerous regional and state qualifiers, three individual state champions, and earned Piedmont District Coach of the Year honors five times.
At P&HCC, Underwood joined the coaching staff in 2019 and was elevated to his current role in 2024. He is dedicated to building a culture of excellence, emphasizing both competitive success and academic achievement for his student-athletes.
Outside of coaching, Underwood is the proud father of his son, Corbin, a senior history major at Randolph College.
